Favor or Opportunity?

It’s absurd to imagine anyone saying, “Can you do me a favor? Go see the latest XYZ movie for me.”
More likely, you’d hear “OMG! Did you see XYZ movie? It is so awesome! You have to see it. I’ll even go with you and see it again.”
The first one just makes you go “Huh?” While the second exclamation provides a sense of excitement and the desire to partake, right?
So then why, time after time, do direct sales consultants spew craziness such as:
1. “Can you do me a favor and host a party?” Or
2. “Can you host a party for me?” These are the same consultants who lament that
3. “They can’t get anyone to have a party.”
Let’s review:
1. Potential hostesses don’t do the consultant a favor. That’s backwards. It’s the other way around – the consultants should have something incredibly exciting that they want the hostesses to have an opportunity to experience.
2. Likewise, hostesses don’t have parties for the consultant. The consultant facilitates the party for the hostess, in order that she may earn free stuff.
3. If consultants are trying get people to have parties, is it any wonder they are unsuccessful? Do you know how difficult it is to get a bovine into a trailer to take to slaughter? “Get people to have” is akin to “Forcing them”, isn’t it?
Here’s a challenge for those direct sales consultants who may be guilty of uttering some of the above language:
From this point forward change your stinkin’ thinkin’ about home parties. The first step in changing your attitude is to change the verbiage you’re using. Omit phrases such as “Do me a favor”, “Have a party for me” and complaints of how you “Can’t get anyone to have a party”.
Once your words and your attitude change from favor mode to opportunity mode you should start to see your calendar fill up!

I agree. Many people connect favors with
effort. It’s easier to join volunteers, when the favor is packed as a present. Like Tom Sawyer and the fence.
