Thanks to Linda Locke for twittering a link to this USA Today article about moms in business.
Steve Strauss highlights several moms who have started businesses, giving them props for what they’ve accomplished which is very cool. But what I really liked about the article is that he ‘gets us’.
He says: ‘Starting a business helps them not only fill a need in the marketplace, but one in their own home as well.‘
This is the important difference that sets a WAHM apart from other women in business. Our motivation to be in business shapes the sort of business that we create. It doesn’t make as any less ‘in business’ though and I appreciate that this writer acknowledges that.

Great article, he does get it. I am one wahm who does it because I want to, because I need something of my own, it’s great being home for the kids, but I would probably be home regardless due to daycare costs, my business gives me my own sense of self.
I think WAHMs definitely get more than financial satisfaction from their businesses because they enter it not to become a millionaire (though that can be a nice by product of working at home!) but rather to be there for their families and to have a sense of control over how they earn an income.
Many people spend their lives working for others just to pay their bills and get a pension. WAHMs have decided they don’t want to shut down the most important part of their lives while they work outside the home for 8-12 hours each day (adding in commute time).
If a WAHM is meeting her bills and has the flexibility to be with her children as they need her – you’d have a hard time tempting her to work outside the home even if it meant earning more money. That flexibility has a value placed on it that few jobs could ever match.
