I remember how thrilled I was a few years back when I bought my first laptop computer. After a decade of being chained to a desk, it was amazing to be set free to enjoy writing, designing and web surfing from my cushy love seat or better yet – from the coffee shop in town.
About two years ago I packed up my love seat friendly workstation and shipped it to Hawaii. It was a bittersweet good-bye. As much as I hated to send it away, I had a good reason.
My nephew had recently plummeted from the sky in a para sailing accident, leaving him partially paralized and in a great deal of pain. Going from a life of flying through the sky on an almost daily basis (he was actually an instructor) to being homebound – was a rough transition. I felt like he needed my laptop more than I did – so off it went!
I embraced desk life again and told myself that a love seat is best used for watching Stargate on DVD or keeping up with my DVR.
But deep down – I knew I’d want another laptop one day.
It took longer than I expected. We moved twice and I had to upgrade my desktop along the way. There’s always something putting a demand on our budget isn’t there? Well, yesterday I finally cracked open the box of a brand new Dell Inspiron. Woohoo!

Kelly,
first of all I hope your nephew is doing not too bad with your/his laptop.
I’ve got also one – it’s an ACER Travelmate and quite some years old now. It’s a bit slow now, and sometimes I think of getting a new one. But then I say to myself: it still does the work it has to do, so I keep it.
Have fun with your new one!

Kelly-
So glad you are enjoying your new Dell laptop. What color did you end up getting? I’d love to hear how your re-found freedom from the desk is changing how you work from home!

Ulla, my nephew is doing pretty darned great for surviving a fall from the sky and a broken back
Thanks for asking!
Kara, it’s just black – nothing fancy. If I had my druthers I’d have red
So far my re-found freedom means being able to blog at night while hanging out on Quad Watch – which is awesome!
Congrats! I got myself a Dell Inspiron 2 months ago and I LOVE it. I feel so weird using the desktop now and rarely do. It was awesome to go away for 2 weeks and be able to have everything with me on my own computer and still get work done!!!
