Wading Through an Olympic Funk

I don’t know about you – but this week I’ve been in a bit of a funk.
I’ve blogged here before about losing your mojo. That isn’t really what I’ve been experiencing. I haven’t lost interest in anything I’m doing. Far from it.
No, my mojo is just fine.
I just haven’t wanted to work.
Can I blame it on the Olympics?
I am certainly addicted to watching the games. I’m not a big sports watcher but there’s something intoxicating about seeing people compete at the highest level. Watching Michael Phelps winning Gold after Gold has been pretty awesome. Rooting for USA Women’s Softball keeps me awake in the wee hours. Watching gymnasts fall from the rings or land badly from the vault makes me suck in my breath in concern. Seeing them ’stick it’ makes me cheer!
How can work compare?
Of course, the Olympics are just an excuse. To be honest, I think the funk runs deeper than the games can be responsible for.
I’m realizing that I should have scheduled a vacation into my summer. It’s been a very busy time for me with project after project lined up to fill my calendar. And on top of work, I am still covering Quad Watch six nights a week.
I am sensing that my brain has an overload prevention system and that is the introduction of a ‘funk’. When I don’t give myself enough down time – it simply demands it.
When your body and brain starts to signal that it needs some rest and relaxation, you need to listen. If you don’t, it will do more than send signals – it will just start to shut down.
So, I’ve been trying to ‘go with the funk’ as much as possible. That means I’ve trimmed off items on my schedule that aren’t critical. I’ve rescheduled as many appointments as possible and outsourced as much important work as I can.
And, I’ve watched a lot of the Olympics
How about you? What do you do to wade through a funk? Do you go with it like I do? Or do you try to fight it?

I think you did absolutely right by trimming down your schedule.
I think it is important to listen to the needs of body and brain. I do the same (not at the moment, because I am having vacations, but when at work): I cut down my to-do-list. There is no use in having one which you can’t keep up with, it’s only frustrating. When I cut it down and I notice that I get everything done on it, it gives me the power to add up things on my list – step by step.
Just my 2cents,

I can so relate. Tomorrow starts my summer vacation! I’ll be back the next day. I’m spending one weekend at my sister’s cottage. Although this won’t give me tons of downtime, at least it will be a respite from work, the Internet, and being indoors so much this summer. Balance is getting harder for us to achieve with the 24/7 Internet life. Perhaps even small snatches – a day at a cottage, an escape into watching the Olympics – will help recharge mind/heart/soul batteries at least a wee bit!
I’ve felt that way the past week too! It started last Friday, but it was partly because I didn’t feel that well. I then I watched those opening ceremonies, which I really enjoyed. I then spend a lot of time in front of the tv over the weekend.
I’m starting to get it back together now though! Yesterday I wrote up a little plan of action for the next few weeks and I think that helped me get back into things again.
Plus, tomorrow we are going somewhere fun and we have something planned for next weekend too!
I’m not into the olympics but my best friend is…terribly addicted LOL
I don’t fight the funk. I think it serves a purpose. Even God took a day off from creation Kelly!
I find that some great ideas come after I allow myself a funk. I even gave myself permission to go to the book store and NOT work. I read books. Imagine that!
And I had a great time and an awesome idea popped into my head that I set about implementing today.

Oh yeah, I go with it. Sometimes it’s like a stall in my brain, or a recovery mode. I had a really bad one a while ago, and had to step back from everything to get some perspective. I didn’t schedule “me” time! I took a little “time out” and felt refreshed after a shift in focus. *deep breath* ahhhh….
