Website Pet Peeves

stopWe’ve talked about website pet peeves before.  It’s a subject that’s actually talked about ad nauseum, but for some reason the message doesn’t appear to be getting through to those who need it most.

The glory of being an independent consultant or freelance business owner is that we do have the autonomy (in most cases) to run our business as we choose.  However, I could be wrong here, but I would think that anyone who is attempting to earn an income using the Internet would want to heed some advice from those who have gone before and paved the way.

As a public service to those who wish to increase their web results, I thought it would be prudent to list some website pet peeves (read: if you’re doing these things – STOP!)

  1. Pick a font and stick with it.  You don’t need a multitude of text colors and fonts all on the same page.  Please stop doing that.
  2. All centered text.  Screams amateur.  Please stop doing that.

I know there are many other website pet peeves.  Let’s compile a list.  Leave a comment and tell us what you don’t like to see on a website.

Can’t stand when contact info is hard to (if not impossible) to find.
Make it easy for customers/clients/people on your site to be able to reach you.

Good one Tara. We shouldn’t have to weave through a corn maze just to figure out to contact someone. Those peeps are losing countless business due to that one oversight.

It drives me crazy to read sites with spelling errors or YELLING! Most of the time I will quit reading, and if I am really interested in the information on that site I will find a different site.

I hate those distracting flash ads or for that matter too many ads in general. I’m usually out of there in a flash (pun intended).

I hate pop-ups of any kind. If one shows up, I immediately click off the site.

I agree with hard-to-find contact info.

I don’t agree with the all centered text – that is a personal decision. I do not go to a site and get turned off by all centered text – many times it actually looks better and helps to highlight important details. Nothing amateur about that!

And, yes, people will do what they choose and are quite successful at it .
