Working At Home is like Dieting

You might think this is a strange analogy, but in fact, its very fitting. The steps to losing weight or working at home are straight forward. In dieting you’ve got to eat right and exercise. In working at home, you’ve got to focus on activities that make money. But while the steps are simple, they aren’t always easy. The road to success is littered with obstacles.

Temptation

For the dieter, breads, chocolate and cream filled or covered anything can stop a diet in its tracks. For the work-at-home wannabe its warm bed or playing with kids. Temptations stray off course are every where and can be the hardest part of achieving success.

The best way to avoid temptations is to prevent yourself from being around them. This can be a little easier in dieting by not buying foods that are bad for you. Working at home its a little harder. You can’t get rid of your bed or children. But you can create an office atmosphere that is conducive to work and eliminates the distractions.

Plateaus

One of the most frustrating aspects to dieting is to have some success and then all of a sudden, the weight loss stops. You’re stilling eating right and exercising, but the weight doesn’t budge. The same happens in working at home. You’re doing activities that have been successful and all of a sudden your income stabilizes or even starts to decline.

Plateaus are dangerous to dieters and work-at-home wannabees. They are frustrating and discouraging, and often lead people to give up. But you can’t quit. To get through the plateaus in a diet, it can help to make small changes such as doing a different form or exercise, or mixing up the diet. The same can be done in working at home. You can change the wording in the ad you’ve been running or find a new promotional option such as blogging or social networking. Sometimes a small change can enact big results.

Results Vary

Sometimes the hardest part of working towards a goal is to see other people who are doing the same things you are, but are having better results. While there are things that you can do to improve your results, there are factors that will dictate your level of success. Results vary because people vary. In dieting things like genetics, body type, age, and hormones can make weight loss harder (or easier). In working at home, you may be limited by time, experience, or skill sets. While some of these issues can be overcome, it important to not compare yourself to others. Instead, you need to develop plan the fits you (see below).

Personalized Plans

There are as many people who will say a specific diet works as those who say it doesn’t work. South Beach. Atkins. Sonoma Diet. Everyone has an opinion and experience about the success of these plans. The same is true in working at home. Some people love direct sales and do very well, while others don’t. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? They all are. Remember that results vary because people vary. Not just in their composition but in their motivation and personal investment. If the South Beach diet fits a person’s lifestyle and they invest in it, they will be successful. If the person that can’t tolerate going 4 weeks without bread, will likely fail.

Working at home is no different. People who find a product or service they love in the direct sales field will do well. The person who doesn’t, won’t be successful. The answer to success in dieting, working at home, or anything is to find the right plan for you. It has to fit your goals and values, and it has to involve activities you’re willing to do.

There is no magic pill:

I’ll admit I’m frequently tempted to try one of those fat burning pills or other diet potions that help you lose weight fast. But have you ever read the small print that says the pill works when “Combined with diet and exercise”? Many scammers and schemers will try to sell you a magic pill too. They’ll tempt you with schemes that make it seem like you make money doing nothing. Or you can simply sign up and do jobs that don’t even exist in the real world .  The truth is that diets and working at home take effort and time. Often the work is uncomfortable and slow going. Its no fun to miss out on chocolate or not eat while watching TV. Its even harder when you miss out but the results don’t show up right away on the scale. Marketing and sales aren’t always a barrel of laughs either. And often results aren’t seen for weeks. But if you want something bad enough, you need to do the work to make it happen.

Working at home and diets can and do work. But you need to be realistic about them. You need to have a good strategy and be willing to do the work that it takes to succeed.
