What are Small Business Owners Really Saying in this Election? It’s Not About the Taxes, Stupid.

West Chicago, IL October 21, 2008 – “Joe the Plumber” has become a central figure in the battle for the small business vote in this presidential election. While both candidates have focused on small business owners’ concern over higher taxes, these concerns are hardly important at all to businesses owned by a one person with no employees. These micro-businesses account for 78% of all U.S. businesses and earn an average of $49K a year. They drive over $950 billion dollars annually into our economy with their ability to create one job at a time.

The concerns we are hearing from our self-employed audience is that they surprisingly really don’t care very much about tax cuts.

“The concerns we are hearing from our self-employed audience is that they surprisingly really don’t care very much about tax cuts.” Says Sparkplugging.com founder, Wendy Piersall. Instead, Piersall says, insurance costs and access to health care are the number #1 cited worries for solo business owners, by a margin of 3 to 1 over small business tax increases. Other issues cited as equally or more important than taxes included social policy issues such as the war in Iraq and economic issues such as dipping consumer confidence.
